Whatever framework you use to structure your software development life cycle, the ultimate goal is to maintain a smooth workflow, free from interruptions and bottlenecks. While sophisticated SDLCs involve multiple stages and phases—from product discovery to deployment—it becomes crucial to have a tool that allows you to inspect the flow, much as an X-ray machine provides a view inside the human body.

That’s why we created the Cumulative Flow Charts app, which can show you the flow diagram for any data source (Scrum or Kanban boards, Projects, Releases, Epics, Initiatives, custom JQL, etc.) and any timeframe you need—from days to years.

By combining flexible settings—such as chart types (burnup flow for infinite data sources and burndown flow for finite ones), band foundations (statuses or groups of statuses), absolute and percentage values, issue filters, and more—you can examine the flow from multiple perspectives, identify bottlenecks, and assess flow stability to develop an effective improvement strategy.

Here are some examples of charts you can get with the app:

# Cumulative Flow Diagram based on status categories with Arrival and Departure lines

The chart visualizes work in progress over time, showing how tasks move through status categories while Arrival and Departure lines highlight system flow stability and throughput balance.

# Cumulative Burndown Flow chart based on statuses with Initial scope and Ideal slope lines

The chart visualizes how remaining work decreases across statuses over time, with Initial Scope showing the starting workload and the Ideal Slope indicating the optimal pace for achieving steady delivery progress.

# Cumulative Flow Diagram based on statuses with relative values

The chart shows work distribution across status categories in relative percentages, helping teams track proportional changes in workflow balance and identify shifts in process efficiency over time.

# Active sprint Cumulative Burndown Flow chart with Initial scope and Ideal slope lines

The chart visualizes how work within the active sprint decreases over time, using Initial Scope and Ideal Slope lines to illustrate starting workload and expected completion pace for better sprint tracking.

# Health Metrics

**Arrival** (how much work enters the flow), **Departure** (how much work exits the flow), and **WIP** (how much work is currently within the flow) together provide an at-a-glance overview of the entire process.

You can fine-tune these metrics by adjusting the grouping settings and selecting the desired statistics calculation method:

# Custom status groups

If you want to highlight specific statuses—or multiple statuses—on the chart, you can create a new band, assign it a name and color, and customize its order relative to other bands:
